Winston Churchill, British Prime Minister, began thinking of another way to capture Europe after the failures at Dieppe. It was concluded that the Allies would recapture Europe by going through the, "soft underbelly", also known as Italy. Allies invaded Sicily on July the tenth, 1943. During this battle the Canadians proved themselves to be fierce opponents after fighting Italian and German soldiers throughout mountainous terrain. Sicily was captured by the Allies within 38 days. After this victory, Mussolini was overthrown. The Germans, not ready to stop defending their Italian territory, began to retreat to mainland Italy, the Allies followed. Canadians were assigned the task of capturing Ortona. Before Canadians could reach their destination, they had to capture several German occupied villages. By December the twenty eighth, 1943, Canadians captured Ortona.
