In 1949 the Allies made the crucial decision of saving soldiers lives over their planned invasion in which they would support France. Germans had moved much faster than anticipated, leaving British and French troops trapped in the French port of Dunkirk. Soldiers evacuated the port, it is estimated that nearly 340,000 men were saved. Soon after, France surrendered to Germany. Although the Allies had become victorious morally, an ally of theirs had now fallen to Germany.
